The key to why this may not get mainstream press is not in the political “in-correctness” of the concept, but in the conditional nature of this particular study and report. “Cigarette smoking and other tobacco use APPEAR to protect against Parkinson’s disease, according to a POOLED analysis”. This is a very loose collection of data and it may well be that a sucking motion is what has a preventative effect - not burning tobacco. Sucking on a piece of raw wood might have the same positive effect. Fact and clinical study will answer the conditionals.

4. I appreciate your incorporating my prior comment into the post, but not its deletion.

   So, fatty foods or alchohol? Again, the analogy is imprecise. Both can be consumed safely in moderation over long periods of time, with relatively little risk of addiction. Tobacco, on the other hand, yields apparent neurological benefits only through regular and continued use - which also exposes the user to a near-certainty of addiction and to risks that far outweigh the potential benefits.

   But I think you’re missing the underlying point. There’s simply no question that cigarettes are bad for you. There is no media conspiracy to downplay their hidden benefits, no liberal cabal dedicated to concealing their many virtues. The diminished risk of Parkinson’s deserves very little attention - and it won’t until the responsible compounds are isolated and identified, so that the cure won’t be worse than the disease. This story is receiving little play because it’s not (yet) that big a deal.

   This has nothing to do with the nanny state. You’re barking up the wrong tree.

7. My mom died of lung cancer. She stopped smoking 25 years before but never developed Parkinson’s. My dad never stopped smoking and he developed Parkinson’s.

   How did the researchers factor out the fact that smokers die earlier whereas Parkinson’s affects people as they get older? It’s possible that the group of smokers who lived to old age had exceptional genes influencing whether they developed Parkinson’s NOT the theorectical protective effects of tobacco. Additional points that need covering is who paid for the study? And there is no mechanism put forth to try to explain why smoking would decrease Parkinson’s risk.

8. The word “appear” has nothing to do with it. This is standard language for a case-control study. Since the subjects were not followed over time, one can only note a statistically significant association between variables, but not a cause-effect relationship. However, the fact that such a huge study population was used [2328 + 4113], and a dose-response relationship was noted both give considerable merit to their claims.

   The reason this will not be picked up by the MSM is simple - this study does not fit in the running narrative of “smoking=bad. period.” Many studies of highly questionable merit that fit “the story” are frequently picked up my the MSM.

10. It’s not immoral to point out news, but it is to ignore the context that no one really dies from Parkinson’s, per se, whereas 400,000 Americans die annually from smoking.

    And you show a perverse bias in referring to a “degenerative disorder of the central nervous system” that doesn’t actually kill you, while antiseptically conceding that smoking “may” kill you.

    Perhaps while you were including details about what Parkinson’s does to a person, you could have used in regard to smoking — in the name of fairness — allusions to pertified lungs, hospital beds and breathing apparati.

13. The relationship between death and this effect is extremely important. I heard the author present this data several years ago and she had no good response to the confound.
    More smokers than non-smokers die before the typical onset ages of Parkinsons. The death rate has a relationship to packs/day smoked. Then there are 2 options:
    1. Smoking kills more people who are likely to get degenerative diseases
    2. People who can smoke a pack a day and still live a long life are more “robust” and less likely to get diseases like Parkinsons.

    Until the authors address this issue, this work is no better than the news articles about tofu causing alien abductions.

    You’re clearly trying to change the subject. You started out by making an implicit claim — that the so-called liberal media won’t extol the alleged health benefits of smoking. You claimed that if tofu was found to have similar health benefits, the findings would receive more favorable media coverage. But if tofu was an addictive drug that caused 400,000 deaths a year it would be a different story and you know it — or would know it if you spent 5 seconds actually thinking about your own arguments.

    As to your fall-back position of fatty food and alcohol, neither of those things will hurt you if taken in moderation. Tobacco use in any amount poses a health risk.
